The normal operation of your refrigerator will cause some normal sounds. High efficiency refrigerators run longer than traditional models, but at a lower speed to save energy.

Fan Noise

  • There is a fan inside your refrigerator which helps to maintain the temperature you have selected.
  • Whirring is common when the refrigerator is first plugged in, when the doors have been opened often or for an extended period of time and when a large amount of food has been added.
  • A change in fan speed as the refrigerator responds to changes in temperature due to door openings.

Water /Sizzle Sounds

  • A drip sound may be heard when defrost water is dripping into the pan beneath the refrigerator.
  • The icemaker will make a loud noise when cubes are dropped into the bucket.
  • A click then a water rush sound can be heard when the icemaker fills with water. This sound may be heard once or multiple times.
  • A sizzle sound may be heard on self-defrost models. This is produced when water drips on defrost heaters.

Other Sounds:

  • A clicking/clock sound can be heard when the defrost timer switches on and off.
  • A click sound can be also be heard when the temperature control unit turns the unit on and off.
  • A cracking or popping sound can be heard when evaporator coils are cooling after defrost or when the refrigerator is first plugged in. This happens as the refrigerator cools to the correct temperature.
  • Humming is a common noise that comes from the compressor and is a part of making your refrigerator run efficiently.
  • A boiling, or gurgling sound can be heard when the unit is running. This is caused by the circulation of refrigerant. Gurgling can also be heard due to pressure equalization when closing the door.
  • A whooshing noise when closing the doors is the pressure in the refrigerator equalizing.
  • A buzzing sound can occur if the icemaker switch (on selected models) is in the ON position, but the water supply to the refrigerator has not been connected. To correct, set the switch to the OFF position. Keeping it in the ON position without a water supply will damage the water valve.
  • Vibration or rattling can occur if the refrigerator is not leveled properly. For leveling instructions, consult your Owner's Manual.
